I have a late 2011 imac 27' running 10.6.8. Original aluminum keyboard been working perfectly from purchase until today. Computer was turned off for 10 days and on return, keyboard is no longer functioning. On startup, system is looking for a wireless keyboard. I have done multiple smc resets without success. I cannot perform (or dont know how to) a pram reset as the keyboard is not functioning. I have no other keyboards to utilize.
Usb slots have power as they can run other accessories. I noticed another thread where a similar problem was solved buy a usb extension cord and have had no success with this solution here after buying an extension. Any suggestions or is it a new keyboard? Is there a way to do a pram reset without a keyboard? Hey there anialator, It sounds like you are unable to use your keyboard, as it doesn't seem to respond to anything when you are logged into your account even after resetting the SMC, but other devices work to the same usb port. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:. Try a different port and cable Connect your device to a different USB or FireWire port on your Mac.
If you connected your device to a USB or FireWire hub or to a port on another USB or FireWire device that's connected to your Mac (known as daisy chaining), connect your device directly to a port on your computer. Some devices need to draw power from a USB or FireWire port to work; if you connect a device to a non-powered hub (one that isn't plugged in to a power source) or to a low-power port (such as the one on your USB keyboard), it may not work. If you have another known-good cable, try swapping the cable to see if that works. If it does, you should replace the problematic cable. Check for device conflicts Disconnect all USB or FireWire devices (including hubs and extension cables) except for your Apple keyboard and mouse. Then, connect the device in question directly to your computer. If your device works now, there may be a conflict between that device and one of your other USB or FireWire devices.
If it doesn't work, go to tip 8. If you do have a conflict, you can determine which devices are affected. Connect your other devices to your Mac, one by one, making sure to test that each device works before making another connection. When you find the device that causes the issue, contact the manufacturer for assistance (check both manufacturers' websites for software updates and additional information). Quit associated applications If you're using a particular application that uses the device in question (for example, you're using Image Capture with a USB scanner), try quitting the application and then opening it again. Try another user account or computer If you have another Mac available, try connecting your device to that other computer to see if it works. If you don't have another computer available, log in to another user account on your Mac (or and log in to it), and test the device again.
If the device is working now, there may be a software conflict between the device and something in your original user account. Check System Profiler for hardware Issues Open System Profiler (from the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, then click More Info) and then click either USB or FireWire. If you don't see your device listed in the pane, the issue could be with the device itself or your computer's USB or FireWire port. To rule out the port, plug the device into another USB or FireWire port on your Mac and then check System Profiler again (press Command-R to refresh the window). Also try resetting the FireWire bus. If you see your device listed in the pane but it doesn't work, you may want to contact the device's manufacturer for assistance. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers, Sterling. I had this issue a while back and found 2 workarounds: 1) Plug the keyboard into a powered USB port and it'll work (suggested on another post) After using 1) for a number of years, it came unplugged accidentally and wouldn't recognise it anymore when reconnectped.
I got in touch with Apple Support via the website (and spoke to someone who was able to help in 2 minutes - top marks Apple Support!), so it's a faulty keyboard apparently and the suggestion. 2) Plug in another keyboard (even a Windows keyboard - the cmd button is the Windows key!) Hope that helps anyone else looking. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only. Keyboards receive little respect. They collect crumbs, dirt, dust, and other debris. They're frequently neglected, rarely cleaned, occasionally dropped, and the recipient of stray spills. Yet, most Mac users type millions of keystrokes on these devices. Why not invest in a keyboard that makes you a better typist and helps you work more efficiently?
Apple's default keyboards — whether the that requires 24% less space or the that includes a numeric keypad — both look good and enable accurate, crisp typing. At $69 and $49, respectively, they're also competitively priced. But were you to ever use one of two awe-inspiring alternatives, you would likely find yourself wondering how you ever managed without such an upgrade. TechRepublic is responsible for my inadvertent education.
Although I'd grown up using IBM's famed, prized for the solid tactile sensation and confirming corresponding audible click each keystroke generates, like most everyone else, I'd become content typing on the low cost, poor quality, mushy-feeling keyboards OEM manufacturers packaged with Windows workstations. Then I was assigned responsibility for testing a, which (at the time) didn't even feature lettering on the keys. You became a better typist, because you were forced to memorize the keys — that was the mindset. While typing special characters for complex passwords occasionally proved problematic, the return to using a mechanical switch keyboard reminded me what I'd been missing. As soon as the company began producing a, I jumped on the opportunity. There was no looking back.
It's all I'll use now on my Windows machine. If you're a Mac user and spend more than a few hours typing each week, give yourself a gift. Scrape up $169 for Matias' compact and portable or $133 for the Your typing, even for mundane tasks, becomes more crisp. The tactile feedback you receive encourages better and, I'm convinced, more accurate typing. You can't go wrong with either model, but there are important differences, so take note. The Das Keyboard is a full-size keyboard and, as such, includes a full numeric keyboard.
The Das Keyboard is also wired, meaning you're going to have to route a cable on your desk from the keyboard to the Mac. On my desk, which boasts a VoIP handset, an iPhone, a mouse, a, three displays, and two keyboards, there's little room to spare and cables are a problem.
That's where the Matias proves advantageous. Although smaller, its size lends the wireless keyboard portability. You trade the numeric keypad for a smaller footprint. Oh, and the Matias keyboard includes, right on the keys, those special keystroke shortcut characters used in the Apple menu bar. Having those shortcut icons visible on the keys absolutely helps you begin entering data and navigating between active windows more quickly. It's time to upgrade your frequently repeated typing experiences. These keyboards are capable of sustaining service through millions of keystrokes, so it's an investment you'll have to make, but you'll potentially only have to make it once.
Ultimately, you deserve it. What keyboard do you prefer on your Mac? Let us know in the discussion thread below.
